VPEC

VPEC stands for the Vanderbilt Preoperative Evaluation Clinic.  This is the facility where most of our patients are evaluated by a member of the anesthesia department before surgery.  In addition to considering the type of anesthesia that will be used, they are particularly interested in evaluating your overall health and ability to tolerate anesthesia and surgery.  If a patient does not have significant medical problems, the anesthesia evaluation may at times be done over the phone with a VPEC representative.  If someone has significant medical problems such as heart disease or problematic blood pressure, then a visit to the clinic will be necessary. It is important to schedule your VPEC appointment shortly after you schedule a surgery date.  The VPEC appointment must be complete no more than 30 days before your date of surgery, however.

There are two VPEC Clinic locations.  Please be aware of which office you are scheduled.

  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your surgery.  This is critical!
  • Most medications that affect platelet function need to be stopped 5-7 days before surgery.  Examples of these medications are: aspirin, ibuprofin, naproxin, Advil, Motrin, Aleve, Celebrex, Bextra, vitamin E, or herbal supplements.  Please let our nurse know if you are on one or more of these medications.
  • If you are on a blood thinner such as Coumadin, warfarin, Pradaxa, Plavix, or Persantine, please discuss this with your doctor and nurse.
